Sample Geocities Site

The easiest way to get started with web sites is to use the graphic interface that comes with a free Web hosting service. We'll walk through setting up a page on Geocities, but the process should be similar on other free hosting sites. Look at a finished Geocities site.

What You Need

  • A computer with an Internet connection
  • Ideas for your web site

Step One - Sign Up

  • Go to your free host - in this case Geocities. Click to sign up for a free web page.
  • Fill out the forms to sign up for a free web page. Note: Some hosts will try to push you to sign up for a paying service. Don't let them!
  • Keep clicking the "Next" or "Continue" button until you get to the "Build My Website" area.

Step One Point Five - Find the Site Building Tool

  • Choose your site building option - with Geocities, you can choose from PageWizard, Page Builder, or the HTML editor.

Step Two - Design your site

  • Have graphics ready on your hard drive - clip art, scanned images or digital photos. You can find free clip art on Lissa's site. You might also want to check out Webmonkey's Web Graphics Overview.
  • Follow the instructions given for the no-code option. It will include directions on how to use your cool new graphics.
  • Be sure to save your page when you're done.

Step Three - Admire your work!

  • On Geocities, you can click on the link in the upper right-hand corner of the page to go to your site. in other hosts, you may have to look around to find the view site option.
